Betty Casteel

Elizabeth City, NC-Betty Ruth Moore Casteel, 82, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA.
Betty was born May 29, 1940 in Imboden, VA. She was raised in the Cracker’s Neck and Jasper communities and attended Dryden High School. She was saved at a young age, putting her trust in the Lord Jesus. This faith carried her through all of her days with us, and she was ready to reunite with loved ones and her Savior in her heavenly home.
Betty lived most of her adult life in Chesapeake, VA, and was a billing and admissions specialist at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth and the Maryview Nursing Home in Suffolk. She loved to shop and had a style all her own. She was told more than once that she looked like a movie star. She especially enjoyed meeting up with her friends at Lawrence Pharmacy in Chesapeake. This is where she shared both the events of the day and tales of her childhood. She sang with The Moore Family Singers, and always enjoyed reminiscing with her siblings on their many adventures. After retirement she doted on great-grandson Wyatt and treasured every moment with him. She was also quite the animal lover, having many cherished pets throughout her life. She was beloved by family and friends and her loss is deeply felt. We will miss Betty, her laugh, and her cornbread.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Casteel; her parents, Clarence and Georgia Watkins Moore; and brothers Buddy Moore, Scottie Moore, and Gerrell/Jerry Moore.
She is survived by her son, Charlie Hall (Cyndy), Virginia Beach, VA; daughter, Dee Baker, Elizabeth City, NC; granddaughter, Carly Hall; grandson, Matthew Sawyer (Brittany); great-grandson, Wyatt Sawyer; sister, Jackalo Garrison, Bonita Springs, FL; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Moore, Chesapeake, and Anita Moore, Jonesville; nephews, Butch Garrison, and Eddie, Steve, Scottie and Eric Moore; nieces, Melanie Deckard and Stephanie Augustinsky; and lifelong friend Demie Blanken.
A graveside service will be conducted at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 28, with Elder Daniel Hurd officiating.
Gilliam Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve Mrs. Casteel’s family.
