Jerry Douglas Blanken, 73, passed away on Monday (November 19, 2018) at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born in Roda, VA and he lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. He was a coal miner with Westmoreland Coal Co, owned a trucking and cleaning business and sold chemicals for the former Interstate Chemical Co. in Appalachia, VA. Jerry proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Barker; his parents, Bill and Louisa (Lewis) Blanken; brothers, Billy Blanken and Pete Blanken; and sisters, Irene Gibson, Victoria Flanary and Faye Webb.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Juanita Blanken; daughters, Debra Lynn Barker of Big Stone Gap; Lisa Louisa Blanken and Katherine Blanken of Salisbury, NC, and Victoria Blanken Gilley of Kingsport, TN; sons, Jerry Allen Wade of San Angelo, TX and Jerry Wayne Blanken of Hollinsburg, OH; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; sister, Madeline Collier of Church Hill, TN; brothers, Mickey Blanken of Pebbles, OH, David Blanken of Springfield, OH, Wayne Blanken of Hollinsburg, OH and Allen Blanken of Big Stone Gap; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Clyde Stacey.
Military rites, by the VA National Guard Honors Team and local V.F.W. and D.A.V. posts, and a graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon on Friday (Nov. 23) at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens (5650 Powell Valley Road, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219) with Curt Flanary officiating. Friends will meet at the cemetery 11:50 a.m. on Friday for the graveside service.
